The Nebraska Department of Roads’ (NDOR) is currently accepting funding requests for non-infrastructure projects through funding available through the Highway Safety Improvement Flex Funding Program.

Agencies eligible to apply for funding assistance include government and non-profit organizations in the state of Nebraska. Project requests must be for non-infrastructure projects in Nebraska targeting Critical Emphasis Areas (CEAs) in the Nebraska Strategic Highway Safety Plan (SHSP).

Currently the two categories of projects NDOR is considering are public information/education projects and safety equipment projects.

Some major points of NDOR’s Flex Funding program are:

• Projects must target one of the following CEAs identified in the SHSP – occupant restraint, impaired driving and younger drivers.
• NDOR will select projects based on their ability to reduce traffic crashes resulting in fewer deaths and injuries.
• Proposals should include crash data supporting the project, and list measurable goals the applicant expects to achieve with the project.
• NDOR will fund approved projects at 90%. NDOR also reserves the right to determine appropriate hard match contributions. The applicant/organization must provide the balance of funding.
• Most importantly, applicants should not begin work or incur costs until they have received a written agreement from NDOR approving the funding request.
• Applicants must submit funding requests for approval a minimum of 30 days prior to the start of the activity.
